Rameswaram
lies in the Ramanathapuram district of the state of Tamil Nadu and is
often termed as the 'Varanasi of the South'. Legend has it that Sri Rama
halted here after his return from Lanka and worshipped Lord Shiva to do
penance for having killed Ravana.This temple city is famous for the
several Hindu temples devoted to Lord Rama, who, it is belived, had
arrived on the shores of Rameswaram and built a stone bridge across Palk
Strait to reach Lanka to rescue his wife Sita from Ravana. Rameswaram
serves as a pilgrimage centre for both Shaivites and Vaishnavites.

Ramanathaswami Temple - The temple is an excellent masterpiece of the
Dravidian architecture and is widely known for its magnificent corridors,
massive sculptured pillars and 22 sacred wells. Built by the Sethupathis,
the temple stands at the spot where Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva after
killing Ravana.» Gandhamadhana Parvatham - It is the most elevated point of Rameswaram and is located in the north-west of Ramanathaswami temple. It is a two storied structure with a ruined fort. Hanuman is believed to have leapt from this point across the sea to reach Lanka. One can see the footprints of Lord Rama here.
» Kurusadai Island - The island is situated on the west of
the Pamban bridge and is thronged by the marine biologists for research
and observation. It is 20 km from Rameswaram via Mandapam. The island is
famous for coral reefs and houses a wide variety of sea creatures in its
reefs.
» Kothandaramaswamy Temple - This Lord
Vishnu temple stands at the southern tip of Rameswaram in Dhanushkodi. It
is the only temple structure that survived the 1964 cyclones. The temple
houses beautiful idols of Rama, Lakshmana, Sita, Hanumana. Legend has it
that Vibeeshana, the brother of Ravana is said to have surrendered to Rama
here.

Rameswaram Travel Information -
Rameswaram is connected by excellent road-network to all important cities
and have regular bus services from Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Thanjavur
etc. It is also connected by train to Madurai and Chennai. Train services
are operated from Rameswaram terminal to Chennai and other south Indian
cities. The closest airport is at Madurai(167 km) from where flights
operates for Chennai, Coimbatore and Trichy.

Local handicrafts include items made of sea-shells, palm leaf articles,
corals and conches. Silk sarees are also liked by the visitors.
