Set
in the ranges of the Western Ghats, in south Indian state of Kerala the
Periyar/ Thekkady Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the much renowned sanctuaries
in India. Established in the year 1895, the sanctuary fell under the the
Project Tiger Scheme in 1972. The park is basically known for tigers and
elephants, but there are numerous other species of flora and fauna, making
it best for wildlife viewing. In the middle of the park, there is a
picturesque lake that provides natural habitat to a varied species of birds.

Fauna - Periyar is one of the best habitats for tigers, elephant, gaur,
sambar, barking deer, wild dog, nilgir tahr and langur. Watching the
elephants frolicking by the Periyar Lake is an interesting sight for the
visitors. A boat cruise along the Periyar Lake gets you closer to the
enchanting wildlife.
» Avi-fauna - The park is also home to a variety of
birdlife including the Kingfisher, Malabar Hornbill, Drongoes, Darter and
cormorants. Chirping of birds in the early morning gives the visitors a good
start for the rest of the day.
