Set in the ranges of the Western Ghats, in south Indian state of Kerala the Periyar/ Thekkady Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the much renowned sanctuaries in India. Established in the year 1895, the sanctuary fell under the the Project Tiger Scheme in 1972. The park is basically known for tigers and elephants, but there are numerous other species of flora and fauna, making it best for wildlife viewing. In the middle of the park, there is a picturesque lake that provides natural habitat to a varied species of birds.

The park experiences a pleasant climate throughout the year. During summer(March - June), the temperature varies between 21 and 24 degrees C. Winters are pleasant and cool. October to June is the best time to visit the park.
