kms south-west of Bangalore lies the city of Mysore. It is one of the major
cities of Karnataka and is covered by verdant forests. This 'City of
Palaces' has derived its name from Mahishasur. Legend has it that
Mahishasur, a demon king lived here and because of his invulnerable havoc in
the world, Goddess Chamundeshwari, an incarnation of goddess Durga, killed
this demon here. Being the capital city of the Wodeyars, it is dotted with
several magnificent palaces, beautiful gardens and sacred temples. Mysore
with its rich history have umpteen places of interst ranging from royal
Mysore Palace to the enchanting Dussehra festival.

» Mysore Palace - The palace located in the heart of
the city was built in 1911-1912. Widely known as the Maharaja's Palace, it
is still home to few of the royal Wodeyar family. One can see the Golden
Royal Elephant Throne, the Durbar Hall, the Kalyana Mantap and the museum
inside the palace. The palace now turned to musuem has on display paintings,
jewellery, costumes and other artifacts of the royal era. Temples
surrounding the palace are also worth visit here.
» Chamundershwari Temple - The temple dedicated to
Goddess Chamundershwari is situated atop the Chamundi hill. The huge statue
of demon Mahishasura and the monolith of Nandi, the divine bull are the
attractions of this temple. One can enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the
town from this vantage point.
» The Jaganmohan Palace - The palace has now turned
to an art gallery and houses paintings of the late 19th century. The gold
leaf paintings of Mysore are also exhibited here. The musuem also has a good
display of musical instruments.
» Varahaswamy Temple - This temple is
devoted to Lord Varaha, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Inside the temple one
can see excellent sculptures and inscriptions. The temple is known for its
grand Hoysala style architecture.
Climate
Mysore
has pleasant weather throughout the year. Summers are warm and winters are
cool. Heavy showers in the monsoon season between June to August is
experienced.
